When it is decided to coach little league baseball team, it is quite natural to have any thoughts on formulating practice schedules and exercises, equipment, coaches, marinade simply a set of tasks that need addressing.
It is quite understandable, but a terrible mistake, not think about how you will deal with the parents of your players. Most parents are fantastic and understanding people, if the team stays in years, become friends. However, as with any activity in life, there are people who seem intent on doing all around them wretched.
Let’s be proactive and trying to avert any problems or adverse experiences before it starts.
It should be, but is not a requirement that each coach has a team meeting with the players and their parents as soon as the teams put together and definitely before the first practice.
Set up a time and place to meet. I would not suggest your home, as it is your personal domain and any discrepancies will be a personal attack on you. You may not agree with this, but it is a natural human reaction, which cannot be checked completely. Instead to reserve a room in a church, the school’s gym or other public place for a few hours.
Sit and formalise a list of items you want to address and write them down. The worse thing that can get out of a meeting forget to cover an important topic. No matter how good your memory, write it down.
A few suggestions for coverage during the meeting:
* Your philosophy and intentions of how you plan to run the team. This is possibly the most important topic for the meeting which is the number of the cause of the problems in the season.
Don’t be bashful about informing people what you intend to do, be honest and up front. If you are type person could care less if you won a game all season, as long as the children have fun and learned something, say so. A parent who wants his son to be taught baseball with a strict observance of hard practice and a desire to win, should immediately try and get their kid onto another team. It is better for them, it is better for you.
On the other hand, If you believe that skips the learn to play the game and formulate the beginning in order to be competitive, which means win, is very important, the parents who do not want little Johnny is subjected to stress can now.
* Give everyone a copy of expected practice dates and locations.
* If established, a schedule of games, times, locations and field number.
* If you are in a traveling league, maps of how to get to all the different ball parks
* A “treat” or “concession stand duty” timetable.
* Any organization events and dates, such as team pictures, picnics or monthly meetings
These early just proposal, add as many items as you feel is necessary, but be careful with the holding for a long time of a meeting. Short sweet is better.
